Italian olive varieties: A comparison of Coratina and Peranzana

Italy is home to 500 olive cultivars, a real wealth of
biodiversity. But of all of these, two varieties in the heart of Apulia stand out for their
quality, character and tradition: Coratina olives and Peranzana olives.

Both are protagonists of the typical Apulian olive oil, representing two different souls of the same land. In this article, we compare them to help you discover which one suits your taste better… or why not, appreciate both.

Coratina: strength, intensity and character

Coratina olives originated in the Corato area, in northern Bari, but today they are grown in most of northern Apulia. This variety is famous for its very high polyphenol content, natural antioxidants that make the oil particularly resistant to oxidation and beneficial to our health.

Characteristics of Coratina oil:

– Intense green colour with golden reflections

– Grassy fragrance, with notes of artichoke and almond

– Strong flavour, with slightly bitter and persistent spicy notes

– Excellent drizzled raw on grilled vegetables, legume soups and red meat

This is the ideal oil for those who love strong, sharp flavours with no compromises

Peranzana: elegance, balance and delicacy

The Peranzana olive is a native cultivar of Torremaggiore,
San Severo and the surrounding area, in the province of Foggia. It is a dual-purpose
variety: it can be used as both a table olive and for the
production of oil.

Characteristics of Peranzana oil:

– Golden yellow colour with green reflections

– Delicate fragrance, with notes of green tomato, apple and almond

– Harmonious flavour, only mildly bitter and spicy

– Perfect on fish, fresh salads and delicate cheeses

This is the oil for those looking for balance, sweetness and versatility in the kitchen.
